EVANGELISM COLUMN

God Keeps His Word
By Latonia L. Johnson

It was an amazing confirmation for Victor Orlando when his brother in Christ, Mitch Lewandowski, of Wayside Baptist Church invited him to share the Gospel in Haiti. Only a few days earlier, God revealed to Victor that he was to go back home to Haiti to share his faith in Christ. This was only the beginning, God's greater works were yet to come.

Within days of the joyous news, Victor, Mitch, and several others were on their way to San Mark. Upon arrival, Victor was greeted by Y.W.A.M.--Youth With A Mission, a local mission group. Being that Haiti is a poor nation, the conditions were terrible. To sleep on dirt floors with crawling roaches, with no water, electricity, schools or doctors was the norm, and sadly no church for at least five years. The people were like sheep without a shepherd. Victor and his colleagues wasted no time with their mission. As an evangelism explosion student and now teacher, Victor was eager to test the sea of men who were hungry for the Word of God.

"We swarmed into the village to distribute Bibles, but as I had been trained in evangelism, I wanted to preach the gospel to those who responded positively," Victor said.

He was thrilled to see a wonderful response as he went from door to door. People came from everywhere in the village trying to hear the proclamation of the Gospel. They greeted him with smiles like a visitor had never come to their village ever before. With all the effort in fulfilling God's will, that afternoon over 40 people were saved and received Bibles.

Still on fire for the Lord, Victor and his colleagues boarded a fishing boat headed for La Gonave. God placed on Victor's heart to focus on the salvation of the boat captain and was overjoyed to hear the captain invite Jesus into his heart. And even while in La Gonave, still using one on one evangelism, more than 100 souls were saved. On his way back to Miami, Victor realized the purpose for his life. To this day, the excitement is indescribable.

On a later trip to La Gonave, Victor and friend Bill Adkins of River of Life Cell Ministries, knew that they would probably not have anywhere to sleep, but insisted on going. As they boarded a fishing boat in San Mark, Victor was overcome with a big hug from the same boat captain that he led to Christ just months earlier! The captain was so elated to see Victor that he allowed them both to stay at his home with great Haitian food and a huge bed! God kept his promises and Victor was blessed because of his obedience and trust in Him.

"It was like the Lord was saying to me, "O Victor, you of little faith, for surely you must have read my promises," Victor said, and immediately remembered Matthew 10:7, 9-11, which explained the whole experience. Overall during their stay in La Gonave, more than 400 people were saved through the film "Jesus" and further teaching.

Reflecting back on 10 years ago, Victor explained how excited he was when he and his wife Marie heard the Gospel and were trained on how to share their faith. With a future trip set for September and funds not being abundant, Victor hopes to spend more time and establish a presence of Christ in Haiti.

"We've also had they joy of teaching a great number of others both here and abroad, to share the incredible life changing power of the Gospel. Evangelism is the most exciting and fulfilling part of my life. Hallelujah Jesus for saving me and giving me a purpose for my life."
