Khambrell Marshall Profile by Bea Hines You know him as a sportscaster, giving play-by-play accounts of sports games on local television. And you know him as a competent newscaster on News4 Television delivering the news in rapid fire precision, pulling in the viewer with his believe-me-when-I-tell-you look. But do you know that Khambrel Marshall is, first and foremost, a devoted Christian who believes in practicing his faith wherever he happens to be? And that wherever he happens to be also includes his work place? Marshall, 45, married 18 years to Debbie and the father of two daughters, said being a Christian has given him a "tremendous" amount of resilience and strength. "I count on it to keep me through the times that are stressful, and I am always aware that people need to be able to see Christ through those of us who are Christians," he said. Marshall was blessed to be born into a family where his parents were God-loving people. "I was born in the Hayes C.M.E. Church in my hometown of Seaside, California," he said. But it wasn’t until he was 14, and had a clear understanding of what it meant to be a Christian, that Marshall gave his heart to the Lord.
Prior to that time, he remembers that even as a young child he tried to do the right thing simply because "Mom said…" "But as I grew up, what Mom said to me made a lot of sense. And as a believing adult, it is a matter of applying these Christian principles to life, " Marshall said. As a Christian working in the media, Marshall said his faith has seen him through some tight spots. It has helped him to have peace when dealing with so many different attitudes and issues. He said he has learned over the years that through His presence,…I can do all things. It helps me to get through a lot of trials " Marshall believes that a Christian is a happy individual and should show it in the way he or she interacts with others. He said a simple smile can help someone else and also send the message that they too, can become a better individual. That doesn’t mean that his life as a high profile Christian isn’t without problems. "There are so many times when I have such a busy day, when my schedule is so heavy, I have to stop and pray: ‘Lord help me deal with this…’ "I find that prayer has been a tremendous force in helping me to get through whatever is before me," Marshall said. At his workplace, Marshall tries to be friendly and as Christ-like as possible, without being overbearing But at home, he’s not only Christian who happens to be a newscaster; he’s a husband and a father who wants the very best for his family. And he admits: "It’s one of the scariest things…in terms of what I want for my daughters. I know I want their happiness and their own security. And I also want them to know they can do whatever they want to do in life," he said. Although he enjoys his career, it sometimes pains Marshall that he doesn’t seem to have enough time with his family. Often his schedule is so tight he only sees them in the morning and Late at night when he kisses them while they sleep. "Then I stop and thank God…It is because of my career that I can provide for them and give them a secure home," he said. One of the bright spots in his life is the relationship that he has with his wife Debbie. Theirs has been a good marriage, Marshall said. They go as a family to Riverside Baptist Church and he credits his wife with being the "spiritual straw that stirs the drink." "For instance" he says, "I often find it hard to pray for forgiveness, but Debbie helps me understand just how to ask God for forgiveness. She is very spiritual and I have learned so much from her. Our faith has helped our relationship as husband and wife to grow over the years," Marshall said. "I’ve learned so much from her…I am blessed." |
