DRESS FOR SUCCESS by Ana Rodriguez As I rushed across campus to my next class, a faculty colleague stopped me. "That tie doesn’t go with that shirt," she said. When I informed her that a very able salesperson at a clothing store had matched the ensemble, she said, "Well, he steered you wrong." Worried, I quizzed my students. I got a variety of opinions (most in favor of the shirt and tie) until the last student. "Your shirt does match your tie," he said, "but your socks don’t match." Choosing our clothes can be quite nerve-racking. We want to make sure everything matches and looks good. How many times have we stood in front of the closet, paralyzed by the day’s clothing decision? The Bible doesn’t offer much advice about clothing behind Matthew 6:28-30, which tells us not to worry about it (a command we disobey regularly). But today’s Bible reading gives some spiritual clothing tips for getting dressed on the inside giving attention to attitudes that translate into actions. While you’re getting ready for school or work, don’t just think in terms of sweatshirts and jeans. Remember to "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience" (v.12). And the most important article, the one you should always wear: "Put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity" (v.14). As you face the day, direct some of your attention to what you look like on the inside. Spend some time in Bible study and prayer. Make sure your spiritual ensemble is in good shape. If you do, dahling, you’ll look mahvelous! College Campus Ministries University of Miami Wesley Magazine Guy Brewer (305) 661-1695
